September 2007: Upcoming Movies Reviewed, Part I

A ton of flicks are coming out this September, and I use my powers of deduction to forecast whether or not they’ll be good. Here I examine “Dragon Wars“, “Eastern Promises“, and “Shoot ‘em Up.”

Dragon Wars (D-War) (September 14th, 2007)

The synopsis of Dragon Wars (cleverly shortened to “D-War” on the movie’s official website) is that “Dragon-like creatures appear in Los Angeles…” Funny, you’d think with a movie title like “Dragon Wars” you wouldn’t need to call them “dragon-like” creatures.

Anyway, Dragon Wars, quite puzzlingly, is directed by a Korean filmmaker and helmed by a Korean studio, yet is set in the U.S. and features American actors. As the trailer shows, this film seems destined for the B-movie bin.

Forecast: Bomb

Eastern Promises (September 14th, 2007)

A History of Violence was a great action-thriller and featured director David Cronenberg and beady-eyed actor Viggo Mortensen — this new flick appears to be more of the same by the two and I think it will be a hit.

Forecast: Hit

Shoot ‘Em Up (September 7th, 2007)

Generic title: check.

Action star: check (Clive Owens)

Hot chick: check (Monica Belluci)

Cinematic dud: check.

Forecast: Bomb
