8 Chick Flicks That Guys Secretly Like

There is nothing wrong with liking any of these movies. If you’re a girl.

 

1. The Notebook

The Notebook is one of those chick flicks that you love to hate. It was the date movie of 2004, and most of us guys walked out the theater amidst a sea of teary-eyed women.

The novel was penned by Nicholas Sparks, who also wrote A Walk To Remember and Message in a Bottle, two chick flicks that guys publicly and secretly loathe.

However, The Notebook was a decently put-together film, thanks in part to the director Nick Cassavetes, who managed to sandwich this lovey-dovey teen flick in between John Q, a movie where an armed Denzel Washington takes over a hospital, and Alpha Dog.

Redeeming Quality: Stars Rachel McAdams, who despite being 30 years old, is always hot enough to manage playing high school girls in her films.

2. Mean Girls

 A couple of years ago, Lindsay Lohan was actually marketable, and she plays a lovably innocent high schooler in Mean Girls.

This is one of the few genuinely funny chick flick comedies — it somehow manages to be more clever than “It’s not a democracy… it’s cheerocracy,” something most likely because of Tina Fey’s involvement with the script.

And hey, Rachel McAdams is in this one too.

Redeeming Qualities: Tina Fey’s bra, Tim Meadows actually being funny, and a talent show dance that R. Kelly probably has downloaded on his home computer.

 

3. Jerry Maguire

The inclusion of this movie on this list begs the question: are all romantic comedies chick flicks? And are all chick flicks romantic comedies?

I’ve never made my love for Jerry Maguire a secret — it is an excellent film; however, there are many guys out there who say they hate this movie, but I know they secretly love it. Plus, this film also has football, which is definitely a guy thing.

“Show me the money!” Tom Cruise yells.

Anything for you, Tom Cruise. Anything for you.

Redeeming Quality: Knowing that the little kid with the huge head will probably be on “Where Are They Now?” in a few years.

 

4. Not Another Teen Movie

Okay, this isn’t quite a chick flick, but it’s a parody of pretty much every chick flick ever made, and that counts in my mind.

Just take a look at some of the plot keywords from its IMDB page: “public nudity,” “vibrator,” “hit in crotch,” “torso cut in half“… How can you go wrong with that?

The IMDB page doesn’t even mention the incestual sister played by Mia Kirshner (!).

All in all, this is a funny movie, but you may have to trick your girlfriends/wives into watching it with ya.

Redeeming Quality: The “Janie’s Got a Gun” moment.

 

5. Moulin Rouge!

Let the stoning begin.

Red-blooded males will vociferously express their hatred of this movie, but c’mon… After watching it, didn’t those mash-ups of popular songs stick in your head for at least a day?

If you let women throw your bachelor party, Moulin Rouge! is probably how it would look: Nicole Kidman and Ewan Macgregor dallying about on rooftops and Can-Can dancers.

Redeeming Quality: It’s got Jim Broadbent singing “Like a Virgin,” for god’s sake. How can you beat that?

 

6. Clueless

 A good ten years before Mean Girls, and 13 years after Fast Times at Ridgemont High (which is undoubtedly not a chick flick), there was Clueless. Clueless was directed by Amy Heckerling, who also did Fast Times, and she does a good job of creating an accessible teen comedy.

Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy, and Stacey Dash are somehow convincing as vapid, materialistic valley girls (who’da thought?) and the film is adored by teenage girls worldwide.

However, us males secretly enjoy the movie not only because it is intentionally and unintentionally funny at times, but because it offers a social satire rarely seen in high school comedies.

Redeeming Quality: A then relatively unknown Paul Rudd, who manages to get it on with his (step)sister, which is a better thought than a young Matt Hamill getting it on with his real sister.

 

7. Titanic

Okay, it’s got Leonardo DiCaprio, but men are now allowed to enjoy his movies because of all of the Scorsese flicks he’s been doing.

“My Heart Will Go On” aside, this movie also features the coolest sinking-ship sequence ever put to film.

You also get to see a topless Kate Winslet, but then again, what Kate Winslet movie doesn’t showcase her breasts nowadays?

Titanic, of course, was directed by James Cameron, who also gave us definitive guy flicks like Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Redeeming Quality: See Jack run. See Jack swim. See Jack sink.

 

8. When Harry Met Sally

This is probably not at all a chick flick in any sense since guys seem to love this movie more than girls do, but its being included for posterity’s sake.

Many guys avoid romantic comedies for whatever reasons, which is not a good thing, because every man needs to see When Harry Met Sally at least once in their lifetimes.

It stars a young Meg Ryan and a young, yet still old-looking Billy Crystal; both of them create the most convincing on-screen romance ever made.

Somewhat sappy, often sexist, and pure comedy gold.

Redeeming Quality: What redemption? It’s a great film in itself.
